A beautiful selection of 19th-century salt-glazed stoneware bottles, originally used for Apollinaris mineral water.
Discovered in Germany in the 1850s, Apollinaris quickly became one of the most fashionable drinks of the Victorian era. Served in hotels, restaurants and railway dining rooms across Europe and Britain, it has often been described as the Victorian equivalent of San Pellegrino - a naturally sparkling mineral water enjoyed on its own or mixed with whisky.
Before glass bottles became common, the water was exported in durable salt-glazed stoneware bottles like these. Fired at extremely high temperatures with salt added to the kiln, the process created the distinctive glossy glaze and warm earthy tones that make each bottle slightly unique.
All of the bottles have handles and carry the Apollinaris spring mark, a circular symbol associated with the famous German mineral water source.
Today these bottles are loved for their rustic charm and beautiful patina developed over more than a century. Their warm glaze tones and simple cylindrical forms make them perfect for styling on shelves, kitchen counters or console tables.
Please note: These bottles are over a century old and show signs of their age and history. Some have small chips, glaze imperfections and surface markings from use and firing. These minor imperfections are typical of antique stoneware and form part of their character, telling the story of their long working life. Each of them are in overall excellent condition.
