A warm, playful living room with personality
This project began mid-renovation, with the existing scheme stripped back and the room ready for a fresh direction. The brief was to create an inviting living space with its own distinct identity - more cocooning and characterful than the light and airy kitchen and dining area beyond.
Alongside establishing a new look and feel, the scheme needed to work harder day to day, with practical storage, flexible furniture and an easy flow through the ground floor.

Before:
Creating a warm, playful palette
The starting point was a rust-toned sofa - a colour the client had been particularly drawn to during our consultation. From here, the palette developed around warm neutrals, deep blue, natural wood, black accents and touches of green.
Keeping the walls soft and neutral allows the stronger colours to come through in the furniture, rug, artwork and accessories, while maintaining a natural connection with the lighter spaces elsewhere in the house.
Bringing character to the fireplace
The fireplace and alcoves offered an opportunity to create a stronger focal point. Open shelving on one side provides space for books and favourite objects, with log storage below adding practicality and natural texture.
Rather than matching this with built-in cabinetry, a vintage wooden sideboard was suggested for the television, creating a more relaxed, collected feel. Layered lighting, a simple mirror and decorative details complete the area without making it feel overly styled.
Introducing pattern & contrast
A checkerboard rug grounds the seating area and introduces pattern, while the rust sofa, deep blue chair and abstract artwork connect the stronger colours within the palette. Natural wood, rattan and greenery soften the contrast for a relaxed, layered finish.
Making the room work harder
With the living room forming a natural walkway through the house, maintaining a clear flow was key. A slim footstool offers a flexible alternative to a coffee table, while shutters and full-length curtains balance privacy, natural light and softness. Coat and shoe storage behind the door also makes use of otherwise overlooked space.
A room with its own identity
The finished concept balances colour, pattern and vintage-inspired pieces with practical choices that suit the way the room is used. Flexible furniture, considered storage and a layered mix of old and new create a space that feels comfortable, individual and easy to live with.
